Southwest Monsoon Active Over Many Parts, Century Rainfall At Dozen Places

Southwest monsoon took a big leap over the last 48hr and has reached all the states and union territories.  Its onset journey over the entire Indian region is expected to be complete shortly and before time. Only a miniscule portion of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh is left uncovered so far. Western half of Punjab, Haryana and South & West Rajasthan still await monsoon. Punjab and Haryana are expected to get traversed anytime soon and even West Rajasthan will have it before the schedule date of 08th July.

Last 2 days were recorded as rainiest of the season, both Pan-India and specific pockets almost in all parts of the country. On 30thJune, the 1st double digit countrywide rainfall of 10.6mm was registered against the daily normal of 7.6mm. Courtesy this rain, June deficiency was lowered from 10% to 8% of the monthly average.  Active monsoon conditions will continue over Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Western Ghats and Northeast India.

Three figure rainfall  in just 24hr has been recorded at many places. In addition, widespread moderate rainfall over many parts of the country manifest active monsoon conditions prevailing over different meteorological sub-divisions.  Chief amounts of rainfall in the past 24hr include : Rohtak-188mm, Delhi-117mm, Hoshangabad-111mm, Surat-121mm, Santa Cruz-176mm, Colaba-230mm, Alibag-133mm, Ratnagiri- 112mm, Mangalore-115mm, Gokarna-145mm, Goa-113mm and Jalpaiguri-109mm.  Some of the locations missed the century mark by little margin like : Vengurla-99mm, Dibrugarh-98mm and Karwar-94mm.

Monsoon will remain active over Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, South Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Northeast India.  Conditions are building up towards formation of monsoon circulation over North Bay of Bengal and coastal parts from 03rdJuly onward. This feature promises active monsoon conditions to continue during 1st half of July over many parts of the country.  Heavy to very heavy flooding rains are likely, after about one week over Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Gujarat and South Rajasthan.
