The winter rains are usually there in the northern plains of India in the month of January and February. And, they are considered to be very important for the top food-producing states of Punjab and Haryana. Sometimes, these winter rains also find the extension in the month of March. And, this time, we see it happen as the month of March has started on a wet note for the state of Haryana.
Unfortunately, we did not see the extension of rains in March for the past three years. And, the last three years for the month of March has been rather disappointing. Also, we can say it as there was a hattrick of large deficiency that includes the year of 2019, 2018 and 2017.
Although the rains reduce in the month of March as compared to the month of January and February, there are occasions when the weather activities find an extension to the month of March. But, this feature has not happened so far in the history of the past three years.
In March 2019 the state of Haryana was rain deficit by 36%. The performance of rain was poor so far in the month of March 2018, as the state was again largely deficit by 97%. Similarly, in March 2017, it was a rain deficit of 43%.
Now, contrary to these three years (2019, 2018 and 2017), the previous three years i.e 2014, 2015 and 2016 observed bumper rainfall and thundershower activities.
In 2014, the month of March is considered to be largely rain surplus by 111%. Similarly, in the month of March 2015, the state of Haryana was largely rain surplus by 464% and it has been considered as the rainiest state in recent history. While in March 2016, it was again rain surplus by 63%.
Looking at the rainfall figures for the year of 2014, 2015 and 2016, when the state was largely rain surplus, the winter months i.e January and February observed rains lesser. The month of January and February was largely rain deficit in 2016, however, it compensated in March.
Again in 2015, there was a marginal deficiency in the winter rains in January and February, but March was a record of rain surplus.
Now, in 2020, looking at the current situation, the duo winter months i.e January and February have been opposite to each other in terms of rains. January observed excess rains with a surplus of 61%. On the other hand, February was largely a deficit of equally 60%.
The state of Haryana has already started on a wet note for March 2020 as it has been experiencing a good amount of rain and thundershowers in the first few days of March. Considering the first five days of March, the state is largely rain surplus by 653%.
And, according to our meteorologists, we still have some promising days ahead in the coming week also as we expect some more rains for the state of Haryana.
Although good spells of rain are considered as good for the crops, the only darker side of good rains are the state has been observing hailstorm activities along with strong gusty winds, which is not considered to be good for the ongoing crops.
Now, for the coming week again we expect another fresh wet spell. This spell will start from March 11 and will continue until March 14. The intensify will be more on March 12 and March 13. However, the intensity will be more on March 12 as on March 13.
