Tropical Cyclone

For the coming season, the risk of an ex-tropical cyclone affecting New Zealand has been considered as 'normal'. Whereas last year, Tropical Cyclone Gita struck Tonga which caused severe damage including flooding and even destructed many houses.

Now talking about this year, all the communities should remain alert and be well prepared for severe events. Moreover, New Zealand should remain more vigilant as the season unfolds.

The first warning has been issued by Fiji's MetService for tropical depression TD01F which is soon expected to intensify into a category 1 tropical cyclone. 'Rita' would be the first tropical cyclone of the Season 2019-2020.

During the same period, many parts of Vanuatu are likely to be affected by heavy rains and strong winds. All communities throughout the South Pacific, including New Zealand, are encouraged to prepare for the coming cyclone season and remain vigilant for developing cyclones or other severe weather.

New Zealand is typically affected by one ex-tropical cyclone per year. Well, mostly these systems do not take a direct hit or cause significant damage or life-threatening weather.
