Spell of heavy snow in the mountains and widespread winter showers over north India had a cascading effect to clutch most of the eastern parts of the country, as well. While the hailstorm lashed many parts of northern plains over the weekend, the inclement weather activity travelled far east to cover pockets of Central Uttar Pradesh, Northeast Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal. Bahraich, Lucknow, Kanpur, Raebareli, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Datia, Rewa, Satna, Umaria, Ranchi, Patna, Gaya, Daltonganj, Ambikapur and Shantiniketan were some of the places struck with unseasonal activity. Heavy hailstorms accompanied at Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Jind, Rohtak, Panipat, Karnal, Hisar, Sirsa, Bhiwani, Fatehabad, Jalandhar, Kapurthala across many states of north, east and central India.
Unseasonal downpours and hailstorms have inflicted substantial damage and losses to crops such as wheat, maize and sugarcane. Unexpected weather patterns have impacted the quality and yield of the crops, leaving farmers in delicate and precarious conditions. The severe weather has raised the concern for scarcity of staple food, in the coming days. Cries for the appropriate compensation and relief have grown loud and clear.
Leftover circulation of the primary system fetched inclement weather over the eastern parts. This was fueled by the semi-permanent anticyclone over the Bay of Bengal, pumping moist winds. Eastward moving systems have dragged the anticyclone too, along and off the coastline. The confluence of winds may not be as strong, as it was earlier and therefore, the spread and intensity of the weather will reduce. Scattered but mild activity is expected over Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal in the next 24 hours. The scale and magnitude of weather will shrink further and get confined to a few localized spots.
