Widespread fog in North India disrupts air services once again

Delhi woke up to a foggy day, as predicted earlier by Skymet. Today morning the city witnessed mostly moderate fog with dense in pockets including Model Town, Vikaspuri and Palam. The minimum however, remained comfortable at around 10°C. The sun started peeping out through a thin layer of fog only after 9.30 a.m.

Flight operations came to a standstill on Thursday night as general visibility as well as the runway visual range (RVR) remained zero from midnight till 5 in the morning at the Palam airport. With the early set in of fog in Delhi, visibility dropped to zero at 12 a.m. and improved to 300 meters at 6 a.m. but only to witness a marginal drop to 200 meters an hour later. At 7 a.m. the RVR also dropped to 800 meters from 1200 meters at 6 a.m.

Flight delays in India

From midnight to 3 a.m. 15 international flights were delayed by more than an hour and one flight to Moscow from Delhi was cancelled. 16 domestic flights were delayed by more than an hour and 8 cancelled from 3 to 9 a.m. 3 flights to Bhopal at around 6 in the morning were cancelled as the visibility remained nil in capital city of Madhya Pradesh as well.

Fog in North India, East India

Meanwhile, fog in North India has been a little worse today with many places like Amritsar and Chandigarh in Punjab, Lucknow and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and Gaya in Bihar observing very dense fog. The visibility in these cities dropped to nil at around 7 a.m, severely affecting normal life. In Madhya Pradesh, visibility in Bhopal and Indore was nil and 800 meters, respectively. Jaipur in Rajasthan, the main diversion for flights in Delhi, also witnessed dense fog.

Agartala in Northeast India too observed very dense fog with visibility dropping below 50 meters. Fog has been a common occurrence in Agartala in the last few days.
