Windy And Sunny Weekend Likely For Delhi, Mercury To Rise Next Week

February 8, 2024 3:53 PM |

Cold and speedy winds have been sweeping the capital city for the last 3 days. Fog and mist have literally disappeared and the chill factor has risen on account of wind and humidity. The minimum temperature has been steadily locked between 7°C and 8°C, nearly normal for this time of the month. While the low-level nocturnal jet has dispersed the fog and mist, the high-speed upper-level westerly jet has triggered some strayed cloud patches, inconsequential to any other weather activity. A fair amount of sunshine has raised the mercury beyond the 20°C mark for the fourth successive day, which still remains 2-3°C below the normal.

There is no active western disturbance likely over the mountains, nor there is any secondary system over the plains of North India. Weather conditions are likely to remain undisturbed till the weekend. The minimum temperature will hover between 6-8°C and the day temperature will keep breaching the 20°C mark. Some plumes of clouds may drift across, dimming the sunshine temporarily. Overall, a sunny, windy and pleasant weekend is likely for Delhiites.

An unseasonal cyclonic circulation is forming over parts of North Maharashtra, South Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The northward extension of the trough from the system will reach up to Southwest Uttar Pradesh. This feature will change the wind flow over and around Delhi. The visible manifestation of change will be the reversal of winds in the lower layers of the atmosphere. Seasonal northwesterly winds will be replaced by more northeasterly and easterly streams.  While the central parts may receive unseasonal rains for 2-3 days, the showers will remain on the outskirts of Delhi. An outside chance of light sprinkling over and around the national capital can not be ruled out on 14th Feb. More significantly, the temperature profile will change over a larger region, including Delhi/NCR. The minimum temperature may rise to double digits and may possibly hover in the low teens for a couple of days. The arrest of the cold winds sweeping down the slopes may trigger a rise in the day temperature as well. The maximum temperature may swing in the mid-twenties, rarely seen for more than a month.
