SnowUpdated on October 26, 2015 at 11:30 AM IST:

The active Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir is likely to influence weather of plains of North India in next 48 hours resulting in cool weather and light to moderate rainfall in Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Day temperatures dropped drastically in the hills of North India owing to rain and snowfall on Sunday. While Gulmarg, the famous ski-resort in north Kashmir, recorded four inches of snow on Sunday with the night temperature settling below the freezing point, other places observed day temperature settling almost 10 degrees below than the normal.

As rain continues in the hills of North India, weather in plains of North India is expected to turn cool with a decent nip in the air, very soon. Punjab, Haryana and Delhi-NCR may receive fairly widespread rain and thundershowers after a couple of days.

Updated on October 25, 2015 at 12:30 PM IST:

The active Western Disturbance (WD) over Jammu and Kashmir is expected to continue giving moderate to heavy rain and snow at many places over the state. Himachal Pradesh is also likely to receive rain and snow.

In the plains, Punjab and Haryana may also receive fairly widespread rain and thundershowers. In addition to this, North Rajasthan, Delhi, and adjoining parts of West Uttar Pradesh may also observe isolated rainfall activity.

As the WD is expected to move away (eastward) by October 28, a significant drop in night temperatures will be observed over the plains of North India. This will be due to the north-westerly winds blowing straight from snow-clad mountains. These cold winds will lead to a drop in both maximum and minimum temperatures in the plains, thereby earmarking the commencement of winter in the region.

Hilly state of Jammu and Kashmir and parts of Himachal Pradesh are all set to receive another spell of good rain and snow from October 24 evening onwards.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, a fresh Western Disturbance is affecting hilly region of North India and is presently marked over Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. Being active in nature, the weather system is likely to bring moderate to heavy rain and snow over several parts of the hilly region.

The intense weather activity is likely to continue for next 24 to 48 hours. In wake of this, maximum temperatures that have just returned to normal, will drop once again leading to chilly weather conditions.

Northern plains, which have been witnessing dry weather conditions for past few days, are also likely to witness rain activity due to the Western Disturbance. This will include parts of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.

Jammu and Kashmir will be witnessing third spell of snow of the season. Prior to this, the hilly state had recorded good rains and snow on October 19.

The system is expected to move in east direction and as the system moves away, weather will go dry over the region. However, icy northerly winds will blow over entire North India which will drop both the day and night temperatures by two to three degrees over region.

This system will also mark the commencement of winter season over North India, bracing people to gear up for cold days and chilly nights ahead.
