Sri Lanka rains post

Since the past 24 hours, light rains with isolated moderate showers were observed across most parts of the region, however now weathermen are of the view that the weather conditions across Sri Lanka would take a turn soon and rains will intensify.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, Galle recorded moderate intensity rains of 29 mm, while other areas that witnessed light rains include Ratnapura 8 mm, Anuradhapura 2 mm and Kandy 1 mm.

Moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers are anticipated at some places during the next week in wake of a low pressure area which will develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal this weekend.

This weather system is likely to track westward inducing first surge of moisture over Sri Lanka and southeastern coast of India on Sunday.

Rain is expected to spread as far north as Chennai. Moreover, heavy rain is also likely across Southeast Tamil Nadu and much of Sri Lanka. These showers will soon cover the entire Tamil Nadu and Kerala early next week.

As per Meteorologists, rain and thundershowers will continue across Sri Lanka on Monday and Tuesday. More moisture will stream westward across the Bay of Bengal from Wednesday into next weekend.

It is during this time that a tropical cyclone may develop across South Bay of Bengal between the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Sri Lanka. This would result in the intensification of rain activity over Sri Lanka. Heavy to very heavy rains along with strong winds can be expected.
