Winds of over 100 kilometres per hour lashed South Australia on Monday, leaving over 15000 households without power across Adelaide.
Maximum wind gust of 111 kph was recorded on Hindmarsh Island and 109 kph at Adelaide Airport, ahead of a cold front expected later this evening. As per the weather forecast, the worst is over and conditions are likely to ease once the cold front reaches Adelaide.
State Emergency Services (SES) crews have been working continuously to restore power in the affected region. Extra crews have been called on to deal with power outages caused by the extreme weather conditions.
According to SES, it has responded to more than 350 weather-related callouts so far and majority of calls have been from the metropolitan area, the lower Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula. People have been advised to be prepared in case of extended blackouts.
The biggest task in front of the authorities is the removal of trees and branches down across roads, across people's yards and on structures.
Meanwhile, the final day of the ongoing festival 'Asiafest' has also been called off due to the inclement weather. Authorities have also called out for total fire bans in four districts, owing to the predictions of extreme fire danger across the Mount Lofty Ranges as well as for the north-west and north-east pastoral districts and severe conditions for the Flinders region.
