Sri Lanka Floods

The current depression over southwest Bay of Bengal has lashed heavy rains over Sri Lanka. So much rain has happened that over 200,000 people have been hit by the heavy pouring from the sky.

“47,922 families or 207,556 people have been affected. 19 of the 25 administrative districts in the island were affected by heavy rains, floods and earth slips.” disaster management department’s spokesman Pradeep Kodippily said.

Sri Lankan capital Colombo is the worst hit of the region where many roads have been submerged due to the rains. The heavy rainfall has made trees fall off blocking roads at a number of places in the capital; power cables damaged leading to power outages.

The testimony of the emergency workers tells a horrific story. They found bodies of a woman and two children killed in a landslide. Over 200 people were feared buried in these massive landslides in Sri Lanka. Till now death toll has reached a mind numbing 40 people.

Sri Lankan government has deployed armed forces in the region to make the situation ease out for the people suffering in the rains. Landslide warnings have been issued in at least eight more districts.
