Heavy rains lash Bangladesh, more in the offingHeavy Monsoon showers have lashed most parts of Bangladesh in the past 24 hours. Southern areas in the country in particular have observed significant rainfall activity. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Feni has received 188 mm of rain while Cox's Bazar has recorded 147 mm of rain. Also, Sitakundu observed 171 mm of rain, Kutubdia (196 mm), Jassore (79 mm), Rangamati (76.6 mm), Mungla (51 mm), and Ishurdi (65.9 mm).

Parts of West Bengal in India also received good Monsoon showers. For instance, in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday  Bahrampur recorded 124 mm of rain, Birhu received a whopping 169.8 mm of rain and Nandia observed 83.6 mm of rain.

A fresh cyclonic circulation has formed over North Bay of Bengal and is extending up to the upper tropospheric levels. This system is most likely to move in a West-Northwest direction. Furthermore, due to this circulation, widesprain rain of moderate intensity will occur over South Bangladesh, South West Bengal, along with parts of North Odisha.

If heavy rains continue in Bangladesh for a longer duration, it may lead to flood like situation in the region. Rivers are already flowing close to the anger mark and more rain will only lead to a further addition in the water levels.

Good rainfall is likely to continue in Bangladesh during the next 24 to 48 hours. The possibility of flooding cannot be ruled out, thus the residents of these areas are advised to exercise caution at all times.
