Snowfall of the century wreaks havoc in Moscow, Russian army called in

Record breaking snowfall has wreaked havoc over parts of Russia. Extremely heavy snow has been occurring over the national capital, Moscow. In fact, it is said to be the snowfall of the century as the snow kept causing chaos across the city.

During the past day, extremely heavy snow engulfed the city so much so that the Russian soldiers were deployed to sweep the streets. As per reports, it has been the biggest snowfall event since 1957.

Due to the occurrence of heavy snow, around 850 flights got delayed, trees were uprooted and the roads were covered with snow.

Snowfall was not less than a tempest as more than a month’s snow fell in just 36 hours over the wintry city of Russia. The minimum temperature has also gone way beyond zero degrees Celsius. In fact, the minimum temperature stood at a whopping -12 degrees Celsius.

Moscow recorded 22 centimeters of snow until Sunday. It is said to have doubled in one day.

As per media reports, Moscow’s mayor Sergei Sobyanin, has named the episode as “the snowfall of the century”.  The event has created havoc in Moscow. Power outages were observed as many trees toppled and brought down the wires.

Many residents have been injured in the series of mishap. To avoid any such further incident, schools got shut in Moscow. The authorities have asked people to use public transports and keep their own vehicles at home.

The Russian army has sent in around 100 soldiers, along with trucks to clear up the snow and snow ploughs in and around the Moscow region.
