Stormy conditions to ease drought conditions in southeastern US this week

July 4, 2016 3:04 PM |

southeast us1The spell of daily thunderstorms will continue well beyond the fourth of July into the mid-week across southeastern US.

In areas from Nashville to Atlanta and Raleigh, North Carolina could see a few days of pop up thunderstorms this week. There is plenty of moisture coming in from the Gulf of Mexico which will provide fuel for thunderstorms to crop up each afternoon through Wednesday.

The patchy nature of the storms will mean that not every locations will receive rain on a given day. However, any storms that could develop will be locally strong. The threat of widespread severe weather is low yet some of the strong storms might produce gusty winds and small hail.

Some storms could contain heavy downpours which could lead to flash flooding especially in those areas which are hit by storms frequently. People in the area will have to be on alert as the downpours will be sudden. Mostly these storms will affect during the afternoon and that too for a period of one or two hours. The day will start on a sunny note.

According to authorities more than 10 million people across the southeast US are affected by drought. Much of Georgia and Alabama are under a moderate to severe drought.

The thunderstorms are expected to ease up during the second half of the week.
