Torrential rains to bring major flooding in Florida

August 9, 2016 10:12 AM |

Flood in FloridaA tropical weather system will bring torrential rains and increase the risk of flooding over northern and western parts of Florida through the middle of this week.

The slow-moving system will have the potential to pour about 1 to 3 inches of rains over few places in northern Florida.

Total amounts of rainfall could exceed 5 inches in many parts of Florida's panhandle and the northwestern peninsula. We cannot rule out a foot of rain over few communities. Incessant rains will aggravate the flood situation by midweek.

On Tuesday, the risk for flooding will prevail over several areas in Florida, right from Cape Coral and Tampa to Tallahassee and Apalachicola. The belt of torrential rains will spread westward by midweek and cover much of the Florida Panhandle.

Travel should be avoided due to road closures and evacuation issues. Streams and rivers are expected to flow above their danger marks.

It is highly dangerous to drive through a flooded road as the driver will not be aware of the condition of the road underneath. Moreover, the flow of the water could at times be strong enough to sweep away vehicles.

We could see urban flooding in places like Mobile, Alabama, Biloxi, Mississippi, and New Orleans.

On a positive note, the weather system could bring some relief from drought in parts of central and northern Mississippi and Alabama, during the weekend.
