February 9, 2015 5:46 PM |

snow5 CroppedA low pressure system will move across Greece and Western Turkey in the coming 48 hours. The system will cause near blizzard like conditions in western parts of Turkey, whereas threat of floods will loom large on the Southern coast.

The system will gradually intensify on Monday over Greece, causing light precipitation in form of showers in plains and snow in the mountains of western Turkey. However, fairly widespread heavy rain is likely on the Southern coast and heavier snowfall is expected in the east, causing residents travel woes.

The system will reach its peak on Monday night through Tuesday morning, causing sub-zero temperatures in western and central Turkey. Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected from Ankara to Eskisehir and Denizli on Tuesday, whereas coastal areas will get rain and sleet. The result will be snow accumulations of 15 cm (6 inches) in many areas in plains whereas, the mountains in the northwest can get up to 30-60 cm (one to two feet) of snow. To make matters worse gusty winds will cause lot of snow drift of about a meter deep (about three feet). Additionally the moisture incursion from North of Mediterranean Sea will cause heavy rain along the Southern coast of Turkey from Antalya to Icel where 50-75 mm of rain is possible. The system will linger on during the week and gradually fizzle out during the weekend.
