Less garbage, safer planet!

February 24, 2013 12:56 PM |

How often do you have to empty the trash bins around your home or workplace? If plastic cups, tissues and paper plates fill up your bin every few hours, it’s high time you cut down the amount of waste you send off to the landfills.

Water Bottles

Bottles can be recycled but stopping the bottle habit is one of the best things you can do for the environment. Order a pitcher of water or cold drinks for friends and family while dining out, rather than buying separate pet jars for everyone who then trash them in the bin. Invest in a steel tumbler instead. Water will remain cold and you can drink directly from it! No trouble of plastic and plastic bottles at all!

Tissue Boxes

Though using a handkerchief is the best way to reduce the amount of tissues we use in a day and thus reduce garbage, we are not going to ask you to do so. We suggest you go slow. Alright if you use 20 tissues in a day to clean your oily skin and use 10 more to wipe your hands after every visit to the loo, next time at least don't throw the tissue box away, buy refills for the tissue box you already have instead.

Razor Blades

Whoever invented 'use and throw' razors, forgot that there is no extra place for them on earth. Now you know, your grandfather is smart to be using his old steel razor. Smarter than this, buy a razor sharpener to make dull blades like new again!

Paper Coffee Cups

Addicted to caffeine? You and your teammates have several cups of tea or coffee in a day? Think about your precious planet! Why not replace all those paper cups in the bin with your own personal mug that you can use and wash. Consider purchasing personalized photo mugs for yourself and spread the eco-friendly inspiration. Similarly avoid paper plates for your family picnic or a house party. Bring your reusable flatware set along for the picnic and wash those dozens of plates after the party, no matter how tedious the task. Or if not, put the kids to work for a change.

Plastic Shopping Bags

This one is well known now and maybe you are following it, yet the effort needs to be bigger than this. Even when you go for grocery shopping, bring along a reusable tote to carry your purchases. Believe it or not, it's way better and stylish than those flimsy plastic bags.

Printer Cartridges

When you run out of ink, refill your printer cartridges instead of throwing them away and buying new ones.

Baby Wipes

Remember our granny and mothers always advised to use homemade cloth nappies. Considering how many times you have to wipe your baby’s butt every day, the environment would be better off if you used washcloths instead. They are simple to make and can be easily washed and reused a hundred times.

Disposable Contact Lenses

Instead of tossing a new pair in the bin every week, buy long lasting lenses can that can be used for up to a year or more.
