Kashmir Flood Alert: Jhelum River Crosses Danger Mark, Schools Shut in Anantnag, Pampore, Srinagar
Kashmir is on edge after continuous heavy rainfall pushed the Jhelum River above the danger mark at several locations. Authorities have issued a flood alert and ordered schools to remain shut in vulnerable districts as a precautionary measure.
In Anantnag, the river crossed the 25-feet threshold at Sangam, while at Pampore, water levels surged past the danger mark, heightening the risk of inundation in nearby low-lying areas. In Srinagar, the Jhelum at Ram Munshibagh is inching close to the alert mark of 18 feet, keeping officials on high watch.
Two days of relentless rain have already disrupted normal life — claiming at least two lives, stranding dozens, and forcing the closure of key highways. Several south Kashmir districts including Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam are reporting waterlogging and overflowing streams.
Disaster management teams and local police are carrying out rescue operations, while emergency helplines have been activated. Authorities are also urging people to stay away from rivers and streams, warning that water levels may rise further if heavy rains persist.
The situation remains tense, with continuous monitoring underway. Any additional rainfall could worsen the threat of flooding across the Valley.
