After the initial withdrawal of the monsoon from some northern and western regions, weather activity has resumed over most parts. This includes pockets where the retreat of the monsoon was formally announced. As per revised dates, the monsoon withdraws from the capital city, Kolkata, on 14 October. Therefore, under normal conditions, the chance of rain lingers over the city and its suburbs. The festival, however, is early by two weeks this time, so the threat of rain is more real than before.

Kolkata and its suburbs witnessed light to moderate showers in the past 24 hours. The meteorological regional observatory at Alipur recorded 19 mm of rainfall. It is likely to rain today and continue tomorrow as well, with more vigour and strength. The first week of October will remain under the shadow of monsoon showers, especially between 2 and 4 October.

The low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal has become well marked over the same region. It is likely to move northwest and deepen further into a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal, closer to the coastline. The system is expected to cross the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coast sometime late tomorrow night or in the early hours of the day after.

Under the influence of this system, a strong southerly flow of winds is penetrating deep into Gangetic West Bengal. These winds are rich in moisture and carry the potential for intense and prolonged showers. The southerly flow will persist even after the system moves inland over Odisha and Jharkhand. Due to the monsoon withdrawal pattern over the western and northwestern parts, the depression will not travel very far into central India. The system is likely to head toward the foothills of east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar around 4–5 October, possibly breaking up over that region due to the proximity of hilly terrain.

Under the influence of the Bay of Bengal weather system, fairly widespread rainfall is expected over Gangetic West Bengal in general and Kolkata in particular. Rains are likely to drench the suburbs of the capital city, including Howrah, Sealdah, Bidhannagar, Newtown, Salt Lake, Dum Dum, Alipur, Barasat, and Hooghly.
