The low-pressure area over Northeast Madhya Pradesh has moved westward. It is now lying over North Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Southwest Uttar Pradesh. The maximum turning of the winds and the zone of convergence lie ahead of the centre of the system, covering the tri-junction of East Rajasthan, Southwest Uttar Pradesh and Northwest Madhya Pradesh. These areas will run the risk of heavy to very heavy rainfall today. The weather activity will continue for two more days, albeit with a drop in intensity and a slight shift eastward.

There have been fairly widespread rain and thundershowers over the border areas of Southwest Uttar Pradesh and the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. Nowgong (Naugaon) in Madhya Pradesh recorded a deluge of 122 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Also, heavy to moderate rainfall was witnessed at Gwalior, Guna, Sheopur, Khajuraho, Orai and Sultanpur.

The low-pressure area will gradually weaken over the next 72 hours. The cyclonic circulation will persist and slowly shift eastward across central and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and the border areas of Madhya Pradesh. The system will track as far as parts of Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh by the middle of next week. It may get organised yet again over that area and resume its westward track, traversing eastern and central parts of the country. The weather system needs to be kept under observation for any further development.

The locations with the potential for heavy to very heavy rains will include Gwalior, Guna, Sheopur, Shivpuri, Ashoknagar, Datia, Bhind and Morena in Madhya Pradesh. East Rajasthan cities at risk will include Kota, Baran, Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Jhalawar, Dholpur and Tonk. The cities of Uttar Pradesh contiguous to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will comprise Jhansi, Banda, Orai, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Auraiya and Kanpur.

The intense weather activity will vacate Rajasthan tomorrow and remain confined to Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh for the subsequent 48 hours. The western halves of these two states will be more vulnerable to strong weather activity than their eastern counterparts.
