Depression in Bay of Bengal Triggers Torrential Rain Across East and Central India
A depression that formed over the North Bay of Bengal has brought intense rainfall to several states across eastern and central India. As of 5:30 AM IST on July 25, the system was centered near latitude 21.0°N and longitude 89.5°E, approximately 130 km south of Mongla (Bangladesh), 150 km east-southeast of Sagar Island, and 170 km southeast of Kolkata.
The system is expected to move west-northwestward, impacting Gangetic West Bengal, northern Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh over the next 36 hours.
In West Bengal, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Kolkata, Diamond Harbour, Shantiniketan, Bankura, Purulia, and both North and South 24 Parganas. Localized flooding and waterlogging may disrupt urban life, especially in Kolkata and surrounding areas.

The depression will continue to drench Jharkhand, with districts like Ranchi, Khunti, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Pakur, and Latehar expected to receive significant rainfall. In Chhattisgarh, places such as Ambikapur, Surguja, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Raipur, Raigarh, Balod, Balodabazar, Champa, and Janjgir are in the path of intense showers.
As the system moves further inland, Madhya Pradesh will come under its grip. Cities including Singrauli, Satna, Panna, Jabalpur, Katni, Damoh, Dindori, Mandla, Bhopal, Betul, Hoshangabad, Dewas, and Seoni are likely to witness moderate to heavy rain spells, particularly on July 25 and 26.
