No Significant Rainfall Over Maharashtra For Next Ten Days, Rain Deficit To Grow Over Marathwada

The state of Maharashtra has had a mixed fortune so far in the monsoon season. While, as a complete state, it has received normal rainfall halfway through the season, it is not without valid concerns. The landlocked sub-divisions of the state have experienced inequitable rainfall distribution. Marathwada, the drought-prone pocket of the state, was rain-deficient with over a 40% shortfall till the third week of July.

Courtesy, some good rains for a few days, the situation has improved. The sub-division now has a shortage of about 18% rainfall. The other two divisions of Vidarbha and Madhya Maharashtra are rain surplus by 11%, that is, within the normal range. However, the upcoming lean phase during the first half of August may again dwindle these figures. Marathwada is expected to slip into the deficit category yet again.

The southwest monsoon is likely to go into a weak phase over large parts of the country. The western, central, and southern parts will face the crunch of scanty rainfall. The meteorological conditions, akin to a ‘break-in-monsoon’, are likely to start soon. To begin with, there will not be a typical ‘break’, as the western end of the monsoon trough will continue to hold its normal position, at least for a few days. Later, it may also succumb and shift northward, closer to the foothills. Under such a situation, the rainfall reduces considerably over the central parts. The likelihood of the formation of a fresh monsoon system over the Bay of Bengal appears bleak. The monsoon surge all along the West Coast touches a low, and the westerly stream weakens. This results in poor rainfall over all the four sub-divisions of the state of Maharashtra.

It is a little pre-emptive to predict the duration of this weak phase of monsoon for the state at this point in time. In any case, the next ten days are not promising any rescue from the sparse weather activity. Anything over ten days of scanty rains leaves some anxious moments for the farming community. The situation will be kept under observation, and the lead upgrades will be shared at the earliest.
