Key Takeaways:

  • Guwahati records season’s highest rainfall with 117 mm in 24 hours
  • Heavy rain activity to intensify across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh
  • Thunderstorms likely to peak during evening and night hours
  • Active weather phase expected to continue till the end of April

Pre-monsoon activity has been quite active over the Northeast region. Guwahati received the season’s heaviest rainfall of 117 mm in the past 24 hours. Other locations like Dhubri, Goalpara, Mohanbari, and Golaghat also received moderate showers, while light rainfall occurred over the remaining parts. Conditions are becoming favourable for heavy rains over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Nagaland during this week. Heavy weather activity is expected to extend into the next week as well.

Northeast India is known for intense pre-monsoon weather activity in the form of severe thunderstorms and lightning strikes. With other conditions remaining favourable, even a small trigger can lead to strong weather activity. The valley effect further contributes to the ferocity of thunderstorms, especially during the evening and night hours.

There is a cyclonic circulation over North Bangladesh and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal in the lower levels. An east-west trough is extending across the Assam Valley. Additionally, an anticyclonic circulation over the North Bay of Bengal is pushing moist southwesterly winds across the region. Assam and Arunachal Pradesh will be more sensitive to weather activity, while Mizoram and Tripura will witness relatively mild conditions.

Starting today, increased weather activity will be observed over Upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Between 20th and 22nd April, significant activity is expected over Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Itanagar, and Pasighat, while light activity is expected elsewhere. A slight breather in activity is likely on 23rd April 2026. However, conditions will intensify again from 24th April, covering larger areas with increased intensity.

Along with Upper Assam, central and lower Assam will also receive heavy weather activity. Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya will remain at risk of inclement weather conditions from 24th April until the end of the month. Locations likely to witness strong thunderstorm activity include Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Nalbari, Guwahati, Dispur, Shillong, Tura, and Cherrapunji. Thunderstorms and lightning will be more frequent during the evening and night, while intensity will reduce significantly during the morning and early afternoon hours.
