Lower and mid-hills of Uttarakhand and the foothills and adjoining plains of West Uttar Pradesh are likely to have heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days. There have been drowning rains in parts of West Uttar Pradesh in the past 24 hours. Najibabad recorded a massive 223 mm rainfall in 24 hours. Moradabad registered over 100 mm rainfall in 24 hours for the second consecutive day. Bareilly, Kheri, and Shahjahanpur recorded 68 mm, 96 mm, and 150 mm rainfall during this period. Heavy rains in the catchment areas have resulted in an appreciable rise in the downstream rivers.

The remnant of the low-pressure area as a weak circulation is marked over Uttarakhand and the foothills of West Uttar Pradesh. Due to ‘break monsoon’ conditions, the western end of the monsoon trough has shifted along the foothills of these two sub-divisions. Passage of the western disturbance across the mountains will complement the strength of these two features. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in the next 48 hours, and more so, the next 24 hours may be very critical.

The places at risk will include: Rudrapur, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Almora, Bageshwar, and Pauri Garhwal. The foothills and plains of Uttar Pradesh will also be vulnerable and will cover Bareilly, Pilibhit, Kheri, Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Rampur, Badaun, and adjoining stations. Utmost caution in Uttarakhand and the foothills needs to be observed to meet any eventuality. Though the severity of weather will be extreme for the next 24 hours, the water bodies in this type of terrain keep responding even after the weather activity becomes mild. There is a need to be prepared for any exigency on very short notice. La Nina: ENSO-Neutral Continue: Monsoon May Take 'Break'
