Chennai Rains 2017 Update: Showers to intensify, water logging likely

Northeast Monsoon remained vigorous over Tamil Nadu including Chennai during the first week of November. Intense three digit rains were observed during that period which led to waterlogging and traffic jams at several places. The intensity of rains reduced marginally after November 6, however a fresh spell of rain and thundershower occurred over Chennai and coastal stations of Tamil Nadu in the past day.

On Sunday, Friday, Minambakkam observatory of Chennai witnessed rain to the tune of 5 mm and Nungambakkam observatory 2 mm. In the same span of time, Parangipettai recorded 49 mm rain, Karaikal 43 mm and Atiramapattinam 13 mm of rains.

At present, a low pressure area is persisting over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast. An associated upper air cyclonic circulation is also extending up to 5.8 km above sea level.

In wake the weather systems, heavy rain was observed over the coastal districts of the state however Chennai recorded light showers only.

Further, Chennai is likely to witness moderate showers during the next 24-36 hours, but one or two heavy showers cannot be ruled out. Other coastal stations of Tamil Nadu are likely to witness moderate to heavy rains. As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, on and off light to moderate with one or two heavy spells spells are likely to occur until November 15.

With the upcoming showers over Coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai, waterlogging may once again strangle the roads and people might battle with traffic jams, hence people are advised to stay cautious.
