The plains of North India finally witnessed much awaited spell of pre-Monsoon activities last night. These activities initiated with dust storm, thunderstorm and were accompanied by rains, thundershowers and lightning strikes.

According to Skymet Weather, the states of Punjab and Haryana also experienced some good rain and thundershower activities accompanied with dust storm, lightning strikes, and thunderstorms. However, as reiterated by Skymet Weather, these activities were only of mild to moderate intensity, contrary to the severe weather alerts issued by several leading weather agencies.

Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Bhiwani recorded 12 mm of rains, Ambala 8.4 mm, Sirsa 2 mm, Patiala 2 mm, Pathankot 2 mm, Kurukshetra 1.5 mm and Hisar 1.2 mm. Chandigarh, Narnaul and Bathinda too witnessed some traces of rain.

The reason for this weather activity can be linked with the Western Disturbance that can be seen over the Western Himalayan region, precisely over Jammu and Kashmir. In addition to this weather system, an induced cyclonic circulation is seen persisting over Haryana and the adjoining areas.

With both the system sustaining strength, we expect dust storm and thunderstorm along with rain and thundershowers to continue to lash the states of Punjab and Haryana today, as well.

As per the pattern, these pre-Monsoon weather activities would pick up the pace by the late evening hours. Moderate winds at the speed of 40-50 km/hour gusting up to 60 km/hour can also be anticipated.

Unlike rumored, the activity would not cause any major threat as these are the normal pre-Monsoon activities that are very common in the month of May and April.

Thus, in a nutshell, the states of Punjab and Haryana would relish the rainy spell. However, the only cause of some concern would be dust storm and squally winds, followed by thunderstorm and lightning strikes.

Places like Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and Amritsar in Punjab, while Jhajjar, Rohtak, Hisar, Sonipat and Ambala in Haryana will witness these mentioned weather events. Further, maximum temperatures are also expected to drop over the plains but will remain around the 30-degree mark.
