Updated on April 12: Arvind Kejriwal to announce relief for rain-hit farmers

In a move to become the next messiah for the rain-hit farmers, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has decided to meet the affected farmers and announce appropriate relief fund today in a meeting in west Delhi's Mundka. Due to unseasonal rain, many farmers have been affected and have lost crucial output of their crops and have appealed for adequate compensation from the government. To address the same, Chief Minster is likely to announce relief for rain-hit farmers at a public meeting besides discussing government's policy for farmers during the meeting.

Relief is likely to include both monetary benefit and schemes beneficial for farmers. The move has come after India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other state governments announced relief fund for the rain-hit farmers.

However, even though Prime Minister enhanced the amount of compensation for crop damage and made the eligibility criteria flexible, relief may still be insufficient for farmers as the Centre has also lowered the crop-damaged area.

Relief announced so far

Looking at the state of farmers, Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government released a relief fund of Rs 500 crore for compensating rain-hit farmers. After the resentment of the agitated farmers and their families, PM Modi announced a 50% increase in compensation to farmers for damage to their crop because of untimely rainfall and other such causes. Also, the eligibility criterion for this was lowered from loss of 50% of the potential crop to 33 per cent.
