August 2018, one of the core Monsoon months, concluded on a rain deficit note to the tune of 8%. However, there is nothing new in this as statistics indicate that the month of August is susceptible to record deficient rains. At least, for the last six years, this has been the pattern.

Prior to this, there were two consecutive years of 2011 and 2012 when August recorded surplus Monsoon rains. In fact, the month performed well in terms of precipitation over entire India barring Northeast Region which witnessed deficit rainfall.
Thereafter, 2013 onwards, August has persistently seen deficit rains. Out of the last eight years, 2015 was the poorest of all with highest rainfall deficiency of 22%, which was a severe drought year as well.
India is segregated into four divisions namely, Northwest India, Central India, East and Northeast India and Southern Peninsula. However, to make rains deficient, more than one division must fail in the month.
For instance, August 2018 saw Northwest India and East and Northeast India failing to record its monthly average rains. Thus, even the flooding rains in Southern Peninsula could not save August from falling into rain deficient category. The following table would be able to give more insight to the fact.
