Better rains in April drop down countrywide deficiency to 18 percent

The week between April 19 and 25 ended on a satisfactory note for the entire country. In fact, it followed a similar track of the week before which was between April 11 and 18.

Both the weeks have been normal and above normal in terms of rainfall. The countrywide deficiency which was 48% in March has now come down to 18% after better rainfall activity in the month of April.

Between March 1 and April 25, the country recorded 50.2 mm of rain against its normal of 61.2 mm.

Major contribution came from Northeast India, some parts of East India including Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, as well as parts of Bihar and Jharkhand.

South India also majorly contributed in terms of rain wherein excess rainfall was observed in Kerala, South India Karnataka, and interior Tamil Nadu.

The central and northern parts of the country have remained poor in terms of rain. However, the hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Himachal Pradesh have had a good share of rainfall with the former recording 105% of excess rain while the latter saw 39% excess rains.

As far as Rajasthan is concerned, the state remained 100% deficient. Uttar Pradesh also was not far behind with 88% deficiency in terms of rain.

The normal rainfall for Central India during the pre-Monsoon season is very low. However even those low rainfall amounts were not met.

Area wise, most of parts remained deficient in terms of rainfall with 70% observing deficiency. However excess rains were observed in the hills of North India and South India.

Now, South India along with East and Northeast India are expected to witness rainfall activity in the coming days. Meanwhile, central parts of the country will continue to remain dry. However, the northern Hills as well as the Plains are likely to have a rainy day tomorrow.
