Moderate to heavy rains have been lashing most parts of Bihar and Jharkhand, with very heavy rain at isolated places. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Daltonganj in Jharkhand recorded whopping 295 mm of rain, which is the highest ever rainfall recorded during 24 hours.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, active Monsoon trough is moving across both the states. In addition to this, a cyclonic circulation is also prevailing over Uttar Pradesh and Bihar region.
In wake of these weather systems, good rains are expected to continue over the states for another 48 hours, with next 24 hours being more crucial as we expect heavy rains.
Thereafter, weather activity will reduce as rain belt will shift westwards. However, light to moderate rain will continue for another two to three days.
Bihar and Jharkhand have been receiving good rainfall ever since the beginning of July. Though Monsoon rains as on July 15 in Jharkhand are excess by 6 per cent, Bihar is witnessing rain deficit by 23 per cent. We are hopeful that these rains will help in covering up the deficiency.
However, the bad news is that flood threat is looming large over Bihar. Besides the heavy downpour in the state itself, Nepal that shares its boundary with Bihar, is also witnessing extremely heavy rains.
Every year several parts of North Bihar are drained by the rivers originating from Nepal, which have their tributaries flowing in the state.
