Chennai Rains set tomato prices on fire

November 18, 2015 12:09 PM |

chennai tomatoAlready facing the flood like situation and huge disruption due to the week-long rain, rain related woes do not seem to end for Chennaites. The incessant Chennai rains during the past week has set the juicy tomato on fire as the vegetable retailing at Rs 40-Rs 50/kg last week is now available at Rs. 130 /kg.

Heavy rains over Tamil Nadu and Chennai led to dwindling supply of tomatoes from the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and hindered transportation of the vegetable from the local southern districts of Theni, Dindigul and Madurai. The vegetable vendors who used to get over 55 truckloads from AP and Karnataka are facing a severe shortage of supply as the truckload has come down to only 25 now.

While heavy rain has bid adieu to Chennai, light rain is still in forecast for the city. With time, the tomato prices are slated to come down. Though it may take some time before the soaring prices of the vegetable take a steep fall in Chennai and other neighbouring cities.
