At present also, weather conditions are conducive for more rains to drench the city. In fact, intense thunderclouds are seen over the state capital and rains are likely to commence anytime now.  Cloud configuration is indicating that few places in Chennai and nearby areas must have already started.

According to Skymet Weather, a trough can be seen running along the East Coast from South Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu. With this, humid winds have been blowing over the coastal areas and thus, resulting in rains and thundershowers.

Further, rains are likely to subside during the next 24 hours and weather will go mainly dry again. However, due to the presence of Monsoon surge, isolated light rains cannot be ruled out.

Even being a rain shadow area, Chennai has already recorded 116.4 mm of rain in first 12 days of July itself. With this, the city has already surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 103.8 mm.

Tamil Nadu including Chennai does not record much rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon. Chennai records more than 60% of rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon that span from October to December.
