Chennai receives heavy rain in the last 24 hours, braces for the heaviest spell of the season

November 28, 2019 9:38 AM |

As had been forecast by Skymet, Chennai has received moderate to heavy rain during a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday. While the Minambakkam observatory received 45 mm of rain, Nungambakkam received 22 mm rains. Not just the capital city but many parts of Tamil Nadu have received moderate to heavy rains in this span of 24 hours. Coastal areas have also received good rains. Puducherry received 51 mm of rain while Cuddalore has recorded 71 mm.

At present, the Northeast Monsoon, as well as the easterly wave, have become active. Thus, we expect good rains to lash Chennai and adjoining coastal areas of Tamil Nadu for at least the next three to four days. Chennai may receive on and off good rains until December 2. There are chances of waterlogging and traffic jams in the city.

These rains might lead to disruption of normal day to day life for a short duration. However, the southern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu might get heavy to very heavy rains at isolated pockets. A Low-Pressure Area is soon expected to develop over Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining equatorial Ocean. This system might further intensify the rainfall activities over the southern districts of Tamil Nadu in the coming days. So, many parts of Tamil Nadu particularly the southern coastal districts of the state might get moderate to heavy showers.

The coastal districts of Tamil Nadu might see flooding rains in the coming days. 3-digit rainfall is also possible in some areas.  The Kanchipuram administration has already closed schools and colleges due to heavy rains.

This might be one of the heaviest spells of the season for Chennai and the state of Tamil Nadu as a whole.
