The state of Uttarakhand has been witnessing moderate to heavy rains for the past few days. Isolated pockets in Himachal Pradesh have also been recording moderate to heavy showers. In fact, the last 24 hours were also quite rainy for the hilly states and a few areas did record heavy showers as well.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Pantnagar recorded a whopping 52 mm of rain followed by Haridwar 48.8 mm. Other areas to have recorded some rains include Dharamsala 41.6 mm, Dehradun at 25.6 mm, Nainital 36 mm, Mussoorie 17 mm, Mukteshwar 11.8 mm, and Tehri 1.8 mm.

Not only this, last night, a cloudburst was reported in the Pithoragarh region of Uttarakhand. Due to this, several homes suffered damage and a bridge was swept away. However, there has not been a report of any casualty yet. Residents took shelter in safer areas.

These weather conditions can be attributed to a Western Disturbance which is prevailing over Jammu and Kashmir and North Pakistan. Usually, when a Western Disturbance occurs, thunderclouds tend to develop. Sometimes, their vertical extent is very high and the top of the cloud reaches up to 10 to 12 km. Due to hilly terrain, these thunderclouds do not get a chance to move away and most of the water content is released over a small area resulting in cloud burst.

As per reports, the cloud burst took place in Pithoragarh in Kumaon at around 10 pm. Not only this, due to heavy rains, water levels of the River Kosi are on the rise. Another incident of a wall collapse was reported in the area at the Saraswati Shishu Mandir School due to inclement weather across the region.
As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, rains are expected to reduce over Himachal Pradesh. However, heavy rains are expected to continue over Uttarakhand during the next 24 hours. Thus, the possibility of cloud burst, landslide and flooding in some areas cannot be ruled out.
