Cold Days Ahead For Delhi, Single Digit Temperature For Next One Week

Delhi has seen mostly dry weather conditions so far in November and December 2021. Month of November, as expected, was totally dry and 1st week of December witnessed light rain on 2 days: 02nd and 06th Dec. Single digit minimum temperature days remained far and few.

Total of 5 days have recoded minimum temperature of less than 10°C and the lowest minimum of 9.2°C was measured on 24th Nov. 1st week of December has not observed single digit minimum so far and the lowest  of 10.1°C was recorded at the base observatory today morning. Meteorological office at Lodhi Road recorded the lowest temperature of 9.4°C and Jafarpur was shade below with 9.3°C.

December 2019 has been the coldest month for Delhi in the recent past. During this month, unusually low temperatures were observed during 2nd fortnight when the maximum temperatures remained mostly below 15°C, causing prolonged cold day conditions. Also, December 2019 was the 2nd coldest since 1901, as the mean maximum temperature(MMT) for the month was recorded at 19.15°C against the normal of 23.1°C. 

Incidentally, December 1997 remains an all time coldest with MMT of 17.3°C.  However, 30thDec2019 holds the record of being the coldest day of December since 1901 when it recorded the day maximum temperature of 9.4°C. On that day, other locations in Delhi were further low with maximum of 7.7°C, 8.2°C and 8.3°C at Mungeshpur, Jafarpur and Ayanagar respectively.  Earlier to this, the coldest day for Delhi was on 29thDec1997 when it clocked a maximum temperature of 11.3°C.

Last year, December started on a warm note but caught up later in the 2nd half. It holds the distinction of recording single digit minimum for 18days in a row , between 14th and 31st December, the lowest being 3.3° on 31st Dec 2020. Mean monthly minimum temperature was  measured at 7.04deg against the average of 8.3deg.

No active western disturbance is likely to arrive for the next one week or even longer. Cold winds are expected to sweep the plains of north India including Delhi. Minimum temperature is likely to dip by 2-3 deg during this period. Major drop is likely only towards the last 10 days of the month.  Misty and foggy morning is expected with nip in the air, tuning in to pleasantly warm afternoon with fair amount of sunshine. No rainfall is likely for the next 7-10days.
