Cold Wave Grips Vidarbha, Relief Expected In 2 Days

Cold wave grips vidarbhaCold wave has gripped the Vidarbha and Marathwada region of Maharashtra with minimums falling below normal. The cold wave conditions in the region have left Nagpur and adjoining areas under a blanket of extreme cold. The conditions, however, are expected to abate over the next two days.

Generally speaking, cold wave conditions in the month of December stay limited to North India with states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana witnessing cold wave conditions. The central parts of India, namely Maharashtra, observe cold wave on few occasions only. But this year, the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra have also been experiencing cold wave conditions for the last few days. Normally during this time of the year, this part of the country should observe maximums in the twenties and minimums in the low teens (ie 13-15°C). For example, the normal for Nagpur is 28°C (Maximum) and 13°C (Minimum) whereas the normal for Akola is 29°C (Max) and 14°C (Min). But this has not been the case so far and the current minimums for various places in the region are:

These cold wave conditions are actually an off-shoot of cold wave conditions existing in North India which extend and cover these parts. But the conditions are likely to change as the system in the Bay of Bengal is influencing winds in these parts, possibly bringing light rains and cloudy conditions in the next couple of days. This will result in the abatement of cold wave conditions and temperatures will return to normal in this part of the country.
