Cool summers ahead of North India, limited period of extreme heatwave condition

March 2, 2019 9:02 AM |

Summer-in-Gujarat

With the beginning of March, summer season is all set to make onset across India. March, April and May are the summer months for the country, with temperatures rising as we progress. According to the weathermen at Skymet Weather, March is a transition month wherein we see northern half of the country under the influence of Western Disturbance and cold winds blowing from ice capped Himalayas. However, southern half starts heating up during the first half of March itself.

Meanwhile, summer season is established during April, while it peaks in May. Usually, by mid-April, we see heatwave to severe heatwave gripping parts of West and Central India, particularly West Rajasthan, Gujarat,Telangana and Rayalaseema.

Heatwave is declared when maximum temperatures cross 40°C in the plains and 30°C in the hills and are above the normal average of 5-6 degrees. Apart from this, if the day temperatures settle above 45°C, it is invariably declared as severe heatwave.

Now, as we have entered March, weather conditions will now start changing. However, it seems that the country is likely to see some relief from scorching heat this season. According to weathermen, too many spells of extreme and prolonged heatwave conditions would be few. But Telangana and Odisha would still bear the brunt of it.

Let us have a look at the month-wise forecast for the country:

March

Temperatures likely in Mar-2019

The month of March would see northern and eastern parts of the country recording below the normal average day temperatures. This would be on account of a series of Western Disturbances and their induced cyclonic circulations that would be travelling right from northwestern parts to eastern side of the country.

But central and southern parts would see day temperatures settling near the normal range. However, few pockets such as North Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Telangana might see slightly above normal temperature to the tune of 0.5°C.

April

Temperatures likely in Apr-2019

Hills of North India along with northeastern parts are going to witness normal day temperatures. However, plains of Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra would witness above normal day maximums by 1°C. But Delhi, Punjab and Haryana would see some breather with slightly above average temperature.

Southern Peninsular would also continue to be warm with slight rise in the average day maximum by 0.5°C to 1°C.

May

Temperatures likely in May-2019

North, East and Northeastern parts would continue to observe normal day temperature. Central parts of the country like Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Rayalaseema, parts of Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, parts of Tamil Nadu would see above normal temperatures by 1°C.
