September 24, 2015 2:49 PM |

RainyThe country experienced the rainiest day of the month on September 23. On Wednesday, while the country received 129% excess rainfall than the normal, Northwest India received 26.8 mm of rainfall against the normal average of 3 mm. Thus, it received 793% excess rainfall. Similarly, East & Northeast India received 21.2 mm of rainfall against the normal average of 8.7 mm, i.e., 143% excess rainfall than the normal. Hilly states in North India contributed the most to this rainiest day, followed by Northeast region.

Weather systems bringing down rainfall deficiency

Due to poor or negligible rains since the beginning of September, country was staring at a high rainfall deficiency of 16%. However, multiple weather systems in the Bay of Bengal turned out to be instrumental in providing heavy rain over rain-deficit pockets and subsequently bringing down the rainfall deficiency substantially.

While the depression over the Bay of Bengal moved towards Northwest India and gave heavy rain over Gujarat, Rajasthan, hills and plains of North India and parts of Maharashtra, another low pressure area in the Bay provided good amounts of rain to East and Northeast India.

As a result, on Wednesday- September 23, Jammu and Kashmir received 2140% excess rainfall than normal as it received 91.9 mm against the normal of 4.1 mm. Himachal Pradesh received a whopping 8 times the normal rainfall which was 38.3 mm against the normal of 4.5 mm.

Punjab outperformed other sub-divisions in plains of North India as it received 35.9 mm against the daily average rainfall of 2.7 mm. Assam and Meghalaya received 308% excess rainfall as its daily average rainfall for 23rd September stands at 11 mm and it received 44.9 mm.

Due to good rains, the countrywide rainfall deficiency dropped to 12% from 16%. The monthly rainfall deficiency which was 50% at the beginning of September also dropped miraculously to 17% on Wednesday.
