December 8, 2013 4:49 PM |

Current forecast shows cyclonic storm Madi has intensified into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ and is expected to intensify further into a ‘very severe cylcone’ in 24 hours. “Cyclone Madi is expected to intensify further but weather models are currently predicting it may weaken to form into a severe cyclone again on the 10th of December.

Cyclone Madi is currently over the seas, situated at latitude 12⁰N and 84⁰E in southwest Bay of Bengal. Madi is packing winds of 120 kmp and is moving in the northerly direction. Weathermen say it is expected to move in the same direction for now, sparing the eastern coast of South India. Madi could then recurve in the northeast direction in next 48 hours and head towards Myanmar.

Winds which had earlier picked up speed (of up to 35 kmph) at the Tamil Nadu coast will now reduce with Cyclone Madi recurving and moving away from the Indian coast.

Cyclone Madi is currently moving very slowly over the seas, at a speed of 12 kmph.

Madi first appeared as a cyclonic circulation on the 1st of December, remained as a well-marked low in the Bay of Bengal for five days and then formed into a cyclonic storm on the 7th of December. And today morning at 11:30 it intensified into a ‘severe cyclone’.

Cyclone Madi will not affect the east coast of South India in terms of heavy rain or strong winds but light rain could occur for the next 48 hours at north Tamil Nadu coast, Andhra coast and south coastal Odisha. The clouding effects of this cyclone could drop the temperatures by about 1 to 3 degrees.
