In wake of Severe Cyclonic Strom Phethai, major effect has been felt over two states i.e. Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. This system made its landfall over Andhra Pradesh and equally affected Odisha, as heavy to very heavy rains have been observed over both the states.

In fact, this system even weakened before making its landfall and has currently become a well-marked low-pressure area. Thus, we can say that even though Phethai showed rapid weakening and movement, it managed to give heavy rains over Odisha and its adjoining states.

During the last 24 hours, heavy rains were observed over most parts of Odisha especially the interior districts. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Jharsuguda recorded 78 mm of rain, followed by Sambalpur 74 mm, Keongjhargarh 68 mm, Koraput 57 mm, Angul and Gopalpur 55 mm, Bhawanipatna 44 mm and Pulbani 42 mm.

Moreover, normally during the winter season the state of Odisha hardly experiences any rainfall activity. Since at present the cyclone period is going on and the systems that form in Bay of Bengal manage to recurve towards Odisha, the state receives rains.

Now, as this system is expected to further move towards Northeast India and weaken into a low-pressure area and maybe even into a cyclonic circulation, we expect rains to reduce significantly over Odisha. Therefore, light rains with one or two moderate spells are expected over Odisha during the next 24 hours.

Thereafter, weather will clear up, but sky will remain cloudy. Due to these reduced rains, the day temperatures which are below normal by 8˚C to 10˚C, will now rise significantly. Meanwhile, the night temperatures will continue to remain near normal.
