There does not seem to be any respite from the freezing weather in Delhi and North India as another cold spell in the offing could make matters worse. “A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to start affecting the weather in Delhi and North India from the night of 8th January. While it will give a fresh spell of snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, northern plains will reel under cold day conditions”, says a senior meteorologist at Skymetweather.com.
In the last 24 hours, minimums in Delhi have already seen a drop of over a degree. On Monday, the morning minimum settled at 6.6⁰C as opposed to 7.8⁰C on Sunday. Parts of Punjab also witnessed a drop in the minimums, with Amritsar settling at -0.3⁰C today as opposed to 1⁰C yesterday. Minimum in Chandigarh also dropped a degree to settle at 4.7⁰C.
Haryana, on the other hand is already under the grip of a cold wave, a condition when the minimums are 4 to 5 degrees below the normal average in winters. Minimum temperatures in some major cities of Haryana are as follows: Bhiwani 2.6⁰C, Hisar -2.1⁰C (7 degrees below normal) and Karnal 2⁰C (5 degrees below normal).
“Weather in North India during the early morning hours and at night will remain cold for next 24 hours. But as soon as the Western Disturbance approaches on the 8th of January, minimums in North, East and Central India will start rising from 9th onwards. While maximum temperatures will begin to drop and hover around 16⁰C”, added the meteorologist at Skymet.
So even if the nights will be less chilly, cold days will continue to make people shiver in the plains.
