Uttarakhand Rains continue to wreak havoc, death toll rises to 15

Heavy rains have pounded the hilly state of Uttarakhand on Wednesday as well creating a chaotic condition for the residents of the state. In fact, the intensity of rains in Dehradun can be made out of the fact that spanning from 08:30 am to 11:30 am, 105 mm of heavy rains have flooded the roads of the capital city. Thereby paralyzing the traffic and commutation condition across the city.

In fact, in the last 24 hours, Nainital and Mussoorie too observed extremely heavy rains of 149.5 mm and 114 mm respectively.

These incessant rains not only submerged the roads but reportedly have claimed at least six lives. On account of these terrible showers, the state government has been forced to temporarily halt the divine Kedarnath pilgrimage. Such hefty rains even caused landslides in a number of places and damaged a few buildings across Chamoli and Almora districts on the outskirts of Dehradun.

Many rain-fed rivers across the state such as Alaknanda, Saryu, Gomti, Pindar, Mandakini, Gori, Nandakini and even the sacred Ganges are also on a swell thereby looming threat of flash floods. In the wake of this, people living in the low-lying regions have been asked to vacate and move to safer places.

The Dehradun–New Delhi national highway and several roads in Nainital district have been blocked due to the recent landslide. Haridwar and Rishikesh have also worn the brunt of these hefty rains as the river Ganges is above its danger mark.

However, as per Skymet Weather, such heavy rains are likely to lash districts of Uttarakhand for the day. Thereafter, the situation is anticipated to improve. Though the chances of floods and cloud bursts will lessen, these incidents cannot be completely ruled out. Hence, tourists are advised to stay cautious.

The reason for these non-stop rains as Skymet Weather can be attributed to a Western Disturbance which persists as an upper air cyclonic circulation over Jammu and Kashmir. Moreover, a low-pressure area which is over East Uttar Pradesh.

The western end of the trough running from Punjab to northwest Bay of Bengal across the foothills of Uttar Pradesh is also responsible for such heavy rains. On account of these weather systems, heavy rains that made most parts of the state to come to a standstill have occurred.

However, now this weather system has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area and is moving in the southwest direction. Moreover, the trough is also expected to move towards west, therefore, the situation in Uttarakhand is likely to improve in another 24 hours.
