Delhi Heading For Poorest August Rainfall On Record

August 26, 2022 2:06 PM |

National capital Delhi is heading for the record lowest rainfall in the month of August 2022. Representative of Delhi and base observatory at Safdarjung has recorded a total of 40.8mm rainfall between 01st and 26thAugust 2022. This will be the lowest rainfall for the month, at least since year 2000.

August happens to be the rainiest month with a normal rainfall of 232.5 mm. Prior to this, August 2006  had the record of lowest rainfall of 78.6mm. Remaining days of Aug 2022 are not likely to receive rainfall to surpass this figure. With just 5 days to go, looks like, Delhi is heading for poorest August on record.

Last 2 weeks have rather been disappointing for the capital city.  Between 11th and 17thAug, Delhi registered a deficiency of 82% and this grew further to 93% in the following week from 18th to 24thAug. The seasonal rainfall deficiency from 01stJune to 25thAugust is huge at 28%. All the 9 districts of Delhi, except East Delhi are reeling under large deficit varying between 15% to 40%. Top of the list are North East Delhi with  seasonal shortfall of 55% and West Delhi further above at 57%.

August is the rainiest month for the capital with an average of about 10 rainy days.  This month, the city has observed 6 rainy days but without a single occasion of double digit rainfall. Rainy day is observed when the 24hr rainfall is 2.5mm or more. August 2022 has an exception of all single digit rainfall days so far and unlikely to have one with double digit in the remaining days of the month.

Western end of the Monsoon trough is south of its normal position. City is unlikely to have any measurable rain today and tomorrow.  Trough is expected to shift northward after 48 hours and run in the close proximity of Delhi. There is a chance of passing and short duration  light rain and showers between 28th and 31st August. One or two of these showers could be moderate on 29th and 30th August. The month of August is likely to close with a record shortfall, possibly the highest in the last few decades.
