Delhi pollution continues to be in very poor category, no respite till December 30

Delhi Pollution 1

Delhiites continue to battle air pollution, with no improvement in sight. The pollution levels are still lingering in 'poor category' for the national capital wherein Air Quality Index (AQI) on Thursday stood at 378. Meanwhile, situation was worse for Noida, where AQI was in severe category at 412.

According to Skymet Weather, minimum temperatures over the national capital are presently settling near the normal level, despite the fact that day temperatures are ranging above the normal by 4 to 5 degrees.

Maximum temperature recorded as on yesterday over both the observatories of Delhi, Palam and Safdarjung was 25°C. Correspondingly, Palam registered minimum temperature of 7°C and Safdarjung at 9°C.

The current weather conditions over the region could be attributed to the very light winds that are resulting in the formation of mist/haze and shallow fog for short duration during the morning hours. The factor that hikes the pollution levels are one, low minimum temperatures and subsequently light to very light winds. So, at present, both these aspects are prevailing over the region.

Skymet Weather expect similar weather to continue until December 30. Thereafter, the wind speed may increase that could lead to improvement in the pollution levels but that would also not be a very significant one.

This could be attributed to the persistence of one after the other Western Disturbances that would approach the Western Himalayas.

Consequently, the continuous flow of dry and cold northwesterly winds will get obstructed time and again. Minimum temperatures will continue to remain near the normal, but we expect marginal fall in maximums.

Thus, days will remain sunny and pleasant, with cold morning and nights. During the next few days, we do not expect the typical winter chill that is usually expected after Christmas in the wake of snowfall over the North Indian hills.
