Delhi prepares to welcome Monsoon

June 27, 2016 12:20 PM |

Delhi prepares to welcome MonsoonDelhi weather has remained warm and humid during the past couple of days. Isolated dust storm and thunderstorm activity was observed for short duration, which acts as the precursor to the upcoming Monsoon. However, these conditions failed to bring down the mercury levels.

Essentially for the onset of Monsoon, the temperatures need to take a dip, but the mercury still remains on the higher side. Currently, the maximum is settling at around 39 degree Celsius. While the average temperature during the month of June stands close to 39 degrees, usually during the last few days, maximums do take a dip.

Now, Delhi is all set to receive Monsoon rains in about a couple of days. Skymet Weather had previously assessed Monsoon’s arrival over Delhi around July 1. While the normal onset date for Delhi is June 29, the national capital may see Monsoon stepping in around June 30 with an error margin of one day.

The presence of the low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal and its subsequent path during the next 48 hours will increase the intrusion of moist winds from Bay of Bengal to this region. Due to which, heavy rains are not likely during the next two days.

After June 29, the rain spread and intensity will be better and most places should receive good showers. Also, temperatures are also expected to take a dip in the coming days making conditions favourable for the onset of Monsoon.

This year, the month of June has remained highly rain deficient. So far, Delhi has recorded a mere 16.7 mm of rain against its monthly average of 82.2 mm of rain. During the previous years as well, Delhi has seen dry June. In fact, in the year 2010, which coincidentally happens to be a successor of an El Nino year, Delhi received a mere 3.9 mm of rain.

While the national capital may receive a few good spells during the last two days, the monthly rainfall amount will remain well below the normal levels.
