Dense fog to take a break in North India, chilly mornings to persist

January 10, 2018 1:17 PM |

Patna Cold wave

During this time of the year, the reach and the intensity of fog is generally extensive across parts of northern plains. Though, for the last 2-3 days, parts of North India are witnessing fog-free mornings.

The regions that were enveloped under a thick layer of fog a couple of days back are now witnessing mild sunny mornings and bright sunshine during the afternoons. Almost the entire stretch of Indo-Gangetic plains right from Punjab to Bihar gets to reel under foggy mornings with poor or low visibility.

However, the entire stretch does not get to witness dense fog altogether, rather there are a few occasions wherein some isolated pockets receive dense fog. Towards the eastern part of the country, it is East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar that usually receives dense fog while in the North, it is Punjab and Haryana that gets to see foggy mornings and poor visibility.

Though this time, dense to very dense fog is absent from most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are still getting to witness some dense foggy mornings.

Today also, the fog was seen in the cities such as Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, and Patna with the visibility levels dropping to less than 100 meters. Though fog started clearing up by 10 am leading to smoother commutation.

As per Skymet Weather, a steady stream of light to the moderate flow of winds that are blowing over the region are responsible for evading fog over most parts of North India including Delhi. Furthermore, dense fog is not anticipated to make a comeback for at least another five days.

It is after January 15 that the plains of North India may once again witness fog. During this time, East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar may once again become vulnerable to fog.
