The depression over Central India has been responsible for reviving Monsoon across East and Central India. The system had formed over eastern parts of the country, bringing some heavy to very heavy rains over the region. Thereafter, the system moved west-northwestwards, further lashing parts of Central India.
The depression continues to move in the similar direction and is presently seen over East Vidarbha and adjoining areas. The system is centered at Latitude 20.7°N and Longitude 79.5°E, around 60 km southeast of Nagpur and 95 km eastnortheast of Wardha.
The depression has already given heavy to very heavy rains over many parts of Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha. In fact, Marathwada had also recorded one or two heavy spells after a prolonged gap.
However, we now expect depression to weaken gradually into a well marked low pressure area soon. Thus, we expect rains to start reducing over Telangana and Chhattisgarh now but Vidarbha and Marathwada may receive heavy to extremely heavy rains during next 24 hours.
Not only this, rains would also increase over South Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, North Konkan & Goa including Mumbai which would see moderate with few heavy spells.
Rain belt would also cover northwest Gujarat that would receive moderate showers with few heavy spells. Places like Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Amreli would receive good showers on August 17 and 18.
By August 18 the system would become less marked, resulting in reduced rain activity over Vidarbha, Marathwada and eastern parts of Madhya Pradesh.
Nonetheless, this fresh weather system helped in reducing the rainfall deficiency across the central and eastern parts of the country. Parched areas of Marathwada and Gujarat like Bhuj and Latur would receive significant rainfall, bringing relief for farmers.
