July 2, 2016 7:20 AM |

Dry weather ahead for South Peninsular IndiaSouth Peninsular India recorded good rains during the month of June. So much so that the entire region recorded a surplus of a good 26 percent by the end of June. Several states in the pocket received excess rains in June.

However, there were some regions where rains were below normal. Areas including Kerala, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar islands witnessed below normal rains.

While Coastal Karnataka receives heavy rains throughout the Southwest Monsoon season, this year, the region has only recorded a surplus of 11 percent. On the other hand, Rayalaseema at the end of the month has recorded a surplus of 90 percent.

However, the monthly rainfall for Rayalaseema is merely 67.7 mm while Coastal Karnataka receives about 867.7 mm rain in June on an average. Thus, a day or two of heavy rains results in surplus rainfall for Rayalaseema.

Now, South Peninsular India will observe mostly dry weather conditions during the next four to five days. Scattered rainfall activity is expected over parts of Telangana and Coastal Andhra Pradesh during this period.

Around July 5 and 6, rains will once again pick up pace over some parts and some rains will occur over Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Interior Karnataka. However, Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema will remain dry during this period as well.
