Dust storm and thundershowers have been lashing parts of Rajasthan from quite a few days now. In fact, West Rajasthan is much under the influence of the dust storm and thunderstorm activities. Squally winds have also occurred in a few districts of West Rajasthan. These dust storm activities have also resulted in dropping the temperatures as well.

A few districts have even recorded rainfall in the last 24 hours. In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Phalodi witnessed 31 mm of rains, Bikaner 11 mm and Sri Ganganagar observed 4 mm of rainy spells.

As per Skymet Weather, an induced cyclonic circulation was persisting over central Pakistan and adjoining Northwest Rajasthan. In the wake of this weather system, the sand storm and thundershower activities occurred over the state.

In general, dust storms or sandstorms occurs due to the strong winds passing over the loosely soil or sand. As these winds are strong in nature, they pick up the sand particles thereby leading the visibility across the region to drop.

Rajasthan being a desert state is more frequent to witness the dust storms or sandstorms. These sandstorms are also a threat to property and human life.

Furthermore, a trough is also seen extending from Northwest Rajasthan up to Odisha across North Madhya Pradesh. This trough is expected to persist for another 24 hours. Moreover, humid southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea is also feeding moisture over the state. Therefore, along with dust storm and thunderstorm, thundershowers are also expected to occur at a few places over the desert state.

Despite the moisture content, the thunderstorm activity will be much more as compared with the thundershower activities as the available moisture will not be sufficient to give good rains. Hence, these activities will be short-lived and not widespread covering smaller areas of 10-15 km.
