February to kick off with fluctuating weather over Northwest India

During mid- January, temperatures across the plains of North India dropped down drastically. Few areas in Haryana and Rajasthan witnessed cold mornings where temperatures plummeted to sub-zero degrees. But now as the January ends, the mornings are not as cold.

For next 24 hours, the temperatures may fall marginally over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and North Rajasthan. But this marginal drop in temperatures is temporary as a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to hit the northern hills of India by February 3. With this both minimums and maximum temperatures will rise by 2-3°C over the plains of North India.

With the approach of Western Disturbance minimums rise due to warm fronts brought by the weather system. Moreover, winds over northwest plains will change directions and cold northwesterly winds will be replaced by relatively warm southwesterly winds.

We expect an Induced Cyclonic Circulation to develop over Central Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan around February 3. And by February 4 northern plains of Punjab and Haryana will receive scattered rain and thundershowers. By February 5, many more areas will be covered and scattered showers are expected over Delhi and Northwest Uttar Pradesh; isolated parts of Rajasthan and Haryana will also witness some rainfall.

On February 5, maximums may fall over many places but minimum temperatures will continue to remain above normal by 2-3°C. February 6 onward, minimum temperatures will register a fall of 2-3°C due to the commencement of cold northwesterly winds.
