First winter rain approaching the joyous city Kolkata

January 20, 2016 12:41 PM |

rain in kolkataThis is generally not a season for good rains in the city of joy, Kolkata.

Sometimes, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal receives rainfall due to passing Western Disturbances, but not the Central and Southern parts of the state. However, Kolkata is in for some good showers during next 24 hours.

On Tuesday, fairly widespread light to moderate isolated heavy showers occurred over many parts of West Bengal, barring the Gangetic parts of the state.

These rains are being hailed as the first winter rains for this region. Normally winter rains are very rare over West Bengal. Even if we see some rains, the intensity remains light.

Kolkata is still awaiting the first showers but we expect that it will receive scattered rains on January 20. Light rains will continue till the next morning. Thereafter, the weather will clear up as the confluence zone which is giving rainfall activity in East India will become insignificant. We have to wait and watch if Kolkata manages to cross its monthly average of 11.7 mm this time around.

We have been observing widespread rains over most of East India including West Bengal due to the cyclonic circulation over East Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Bihar. The confluence zone has been created due to the merging of dry and cold Northwesterly winds with moist and warm southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal.

Here’s a look at the rainfall figures in West Bengal in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Tuesday:
